What every woman needs to know about rehydration

Dehydration is a condition in which the body loses more fluids and water than the amount of fluid that’s being absorbed. It generally occurs when you exert yourself out in the sun, or suffer from fever, vomiting or diarrhoea. As we celebrate womanhood in the month of March, let’s focus more on dehydration in women and ways in which they can stay rehydrated.

What causes dehydration in women?

When you exert yourself physically, your body temperature naturally increases and sweating is a natural process which helps in balancing the body temperature. When women workout or when they strain their body in hot and humid weather, their body starts losing essential fluids at a fast rate which could ultimately lead to dehydration. Other causes of dehydration include high fever, excess vomiting or diarrhoea. Pregnant women who experience frequent vomiting may lose a lot of body fluids within a short period of time, leading to dehydration.

How to know if you are dehydrated?

The various signs of dehydration may include tiredness, dizziness, urinating less frequently, passing of dark coloured urine. However, one must note that these signs could also indicate other medical conditions apart from dehydration. When you feel that these symptoms are not wading away, then you must consult a doctor immediately.

What should you do if you are dehydrated?

The best way to fight dehydration is to drink lots of fluids. In severe cases, the doctor may also prescribe ORS as it instantly replenishes the body fluids and maintains electrolyte levels. ORS Coslyte is formulated as per WHO standards and contains the right proportion of Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Citrate and Dextrous Anhydrous which are essential minerals and salts required for rehydrating the body.

How can you prevent dehydration?

To prevent dehydration, you can avoid stepping out if the weather is too hot. Always carry a bottle of water or juice with you. You can also eat water-rich fruits and vegetables such as orange, cucumber etc. to keep your body hydrated at regular intervals. If you are feeling sick or uneasy, then consult a doctor and consume ORS water to replace lost electrolytes quickly as per doctor’s advice. Whether she is a pillar of strength for her family, or is following her passion, she is a true inspiration for many, and hence every woman must care for herself and her health.
